Ham Holy Burger

Awesomeness

Ham Holy Burger
Location: John Lewis, Oxford Circus
Date: 11th August
Burger Ordered: Napoletano with Bacon

+ The good +
Thick patty
Nice fries

– The bad –
Patty too densely packed
Very chewy bun

Not sure what to expect from this Italian styleburger restaurant inside John Lewis Oxford Circus.
Presentation was nice, patty was cooked ‘medium’ but more like ‘medium well done’
The artisan bun was fresh and tasted fine, but due to the nature of that type of bread it was too hard to bite through which caused the burger contents to squirt out with the pressure.
The patty itself was very thick and densly packed so the texture and razor sharp edges reminded me of a frozen burger patty from Iceland, though tasted better.
The beef was very finely ground so the texture wasn’t particularly nice
It wasn’t a bad burger, it was seasoned well and was juicy, but really it wasn’t anything special.

Park Tavern

Awesomeness

Park Tavern
Location: Merton Road, Southfields
Date: 4th August
Burger Ordered: Bacon Cheeseburger

+ The good +
Perfect glazed demi-brioche bun
Great fries
Tasty Bacon and Cheddar cheese

– The Bad –
Cooked through meat only served
Raw onion

Almost didn’t order this burger because the meat could only be cooked through so no option for pink patties here, apparently some law that affects pubs.
However, the burger was very good so I’m glad I did. Two patties of beef, ground fresh in the kitchen, seasoned well with the bacon in the middle and the cheddar on the top, served in a glazed demi-brioche bun which held it all together nicely.
Due to the well done patty it was a little hard to swallow some mouthfuls which was a shame and I’m not a fan of large chunks of raw onion (I did take them out).
Fries were good and the homemade sauce that came with it was very tasty.

Mac n’ Wild

Awesomeness

Mac n’ Wild
Location: Great Tichfield Street, Fitzrovia
Date: 21st July
Burger Ordered: Venimoo

+ The Good +
Nice flavour with the venison
Nice tasting sauce

-The Bad –
Overcooked Patty
Gritty Fries

I was expecting big things from this burger as it was touted as the second best burger in London from TimeOut.
The initial inspection of the cut burger was that it was overcooked, and sadly it was. A little dry and not pink enough for me.
The flavour was good, the distinctive venison patty was noticeable and tasty, and the sauce reminded me of the Big Mac special sauce, but because it was overdone it was never going to get much better.
The bun was okay, a sesame seed brioche, though it tasted more like a white bread roll.
Overall the burger was average, had worse but certainly not up the calibre it was claimed to be at, and the gritty fries didn’t help.
It was a TimOut offer so the price was good at £15 with a beer (Brewgooders, excellent beer with 100% profits going to charity – which I like)

Haché

Awesomeness

Haché
Location: High Holborn, Holborn
Date: June 2nd
Burger Ordered: Steak Le Fume

+The Good+
Smoke dome is just great
Juicy Pink Patty

-The Bad-
Patty possibly missing flavour

I thought this burger was very good, juicy, pink and with nice cheese, bacon and brioche.
The smoke dome presentation fills the air with BBQ smoke and works really well, it’s shame that BBQ charcoal smell didn’t appear as taste on the patty itself.
Saying that, it was still a great burger, up there with the best. The coleslaw and onions inside worked well and the fries were good.
A tad messy but still held together quite well considering the amount of juices there.

Big Fernand

Awesomeness

Location: Percy Street, Fitzrovia
Date: May 19th
Burger Ordered: Le Bartholome

+The Good+
Great Homemade Ketchup and Mayo
Ingredients were of good quality

-The Bad-
Way too sweet with the relish
Dry though the patty was pink
Average chips

Disappointing. Especially after seeing the lengthy queues on a Friday of people waiting to get in.
Burger managed to be both pink and dry at the same time and not a lot of texture. Like biting into a lukewarm sandwich.
Sweet relish was so sweet it overpowered all the other flavours, such as the bacon and cheese.
Handcut chips were average and tasted like raw potato with the thicker ones.
Homemade ketchup and mayo was nice and the ingredients were fresh and of good quality. Just a shame they were assembled so badly.

Market Place

Awesomeness

Market Place
Location: Market Place, NoHo
Date: May 12th
Burger Ordered: Bacon Cheeseburger

+The Good+
Nice streaky bacon
Thick Patty
Good fries

-The Bad-
Medium well not medium rare
A bit greasy and fell apart
Meat needed more seasoning

Presentation was nice with the spicy roasted chilli, however the burger itself was overcooked and the meat was a bit dried out despite the grease dripping from the bottom.
Could have been seasoned a bit more and perhaps needed a sauce, though it was still an enjoyable burger.
It was difficult to eat as it fell apart in my hands.

Saucy Chip

Awesomeness

Saucy Chip
Location: Rathbourne Place, NoHo
Date: May 2nd
Burger Ordered: Bacon Cheeseburger

+ The Good +
Juicy Burger
Excellent overall taste
Nice chips and the best collection of sauces

– The Bad –
A bit messy
Could have been slightly pinker

Another TImeOut deal so the price was great (at the time of publishing £10 for burger, chips and a glass on prosecco).
The burger was very juicy, possibly a bit wet but it tasted great so I can forgive that. Nice demi brioche bun and tasty bacon. Had a real BBQ gill flavour and texture to it.
The patty was thick and juicy, though a little rarer would have been nice.
Overall a very good burger, up there with the best.
The chips were thick cut crunchy on the outside, fluffy inside and the huge range of sauces was impressive too. I opted for Holy F sauce and Chip Shop Curry.

Awesomeness

Location : 3 Berners Street, London
Date: Lunch April 5th
Burger Ordered : Cheeseburger

+ The Good +
Pink and juicy patty
nice sesame bun
Good bacon mayo
Good fries

-The Bad –
Small
Missing some flavour in the beef

Actually a very good burger, it was was quite small though there was an option to buy a bigger patty. It was juicy and held together well. Overall an above average burger.
Really nice skinny fires, nice relish inside, ordered bacon but got bacon mayo.
Just missing that extra flavour in the patty to make is really special.

Brewdog

Awesomeness

Location : 21 Poland St, Soho
Date: Lunch Mar 31st
Burger Ordered : Bacon Cheeseburger

+ The Good +
Held together well
Great value for money
Nice fries

– The Bad –
Well-done patty offered only
A bit small

I wasn’t expecting anything great for a pub burger, that and the only option was to have the patty well done, but it was surprisingly okay.
It couldn’t be compared to the likes of Patty & Bun or Honest burger and there certainly wasn’t a butcher supplying them the meat like Tommie’s, but saying that it was actually quite nice.
Nice bacon, nice glazed bun, good skin on fries and enough pickle and sauce inside to keep it moist.
Purchased with a TimeOut offer, it was £8 for a burger, fries and a half a pint, so it was a bargain.

Honest Burger

Awesomeness

Location : 4 Market Pl, Fitzrovia
Date: Lunch Mar 24th
Burger Ordered : Rib Man Special

+ The Good +
Juicy tasty burger
Tender Rib perfectly complimented flavour
Holy F sauce adds excellent kick
Sauce and pickles and cheese work together
Brioche holds everything together

-The bad –
Fries a little dried out
It’s only around for a month!

I wasn’t sure what to expect from a ‘special’ burger but this was excellent in many ways.
The taste was phenomenal, juicy, flavoursome and with a nice kick from the holy F chilli sauce.
The brioche held together well and it all had a great texture and depth, all the ingredients working together perfectly.
The Rib gave another dimension to the flavour without steering away from being a Burger and made for a very enjoyable lunch.
Chips were a little dry but still nice and crunchy with the rosemary salt but a minor point.
I may never get to eat this burger again which is sad as it’s one of the best I’ve had!
